Peritoneal carcinomatosis is a term which means extensive, or very widespread, metastasis of cancerous tumors onto the inside surfaces of the abdomen. People with peritoneal carcinomatosis until recently were considered incurable and terminally ill. Now cytoreduction (debulking) surgeries can be performed in addition to peritoneal chemotherapy with possibility of cure in some patients. The more cancerous tumors there are in the abdomen, the longer and more difficult the cytoreduction (debulking) surgery will be in an effort to remove all of the tumors. Less widespread cancer is easier to successfully treat than more extensive disease.
